The essence of creative leadership includes inspiring teams to push limits, create, and tell compelling tales that go beyond project management and feedback. My career as Kim Governali, a creative director, digital designer, and art director, has been characterised by my uncompromising dedication to excellence, bold concept pursuit, and powerful visual storytelling.
Leadership has always been at the core of my work, from my early days as an artist to spearheading multimillion-dollar campaigns for some of the most well-known companies in the world. It is also important for the individuals to inspire others, develop their abilities, and lead projects to success rather than only having visions. This is exactly what my experience in the creative sector has enabled me to do.
Starting with a Strong Foundation
I started my career at the esteemed Rochester Institute of Technology, where I earned a Bachelor of Fine Arts in Design and Communications with honours. I have gained technical and critical thinking abilities that are required to succeed in a cutthroat and dynamic industry.
With my degree and an unquenchable interest in emerging technology as well as a love of storytelling, I set out to create work that was not just aesthetically pleasing but also strategically significant and emotionally impactful when I entered the workforce.
Early Leadership Roles and Agency Experience
Leadership opportunities came to me really quickly. Early in my career, I managed accounts for Coca-Cola, M&M Mars, Chupa Chups Candy, Whiskas, Kodak Professional, and Dupont as a Senior Art Director at prestigious agencies like DMB&B and Saatchi & Saatchi. These encounters sharpened my capacity to oversee well-known projects with short turnaround times without compromising originality for advantage.
I later worked as a freelance art director for some of the top creative shops in the nation, such as Cramer Krasselt, TURKEL Miami, JWT, and Y&R Brands. I oversaw innovative projects for prestigious customers like Hyatt Hotels, Macy’s, Rolex, Citibank, and Miami Tourism. I learnt flexibility from these freelance jobs, including how to quickly grasp various brand voices, lead innovative campaigns, and integrate into a variety of teams.
A Defining Chapter: McCann Erickson
My time working as a creative director at McCann Erickson in New York City was one of the most important periods of my career. I oversaw creative work for four years on accounts for Microsoft, Applebee’s, Goodyear, Women for Women International, Intel, Verizon, MasterCard, and General Mills.
I was managing cross-disciplinary teams of designers, writers, illustrators, and videographers at McCann, directing photo shoots, guiding brainstorming sessions, creating brand storylines, and making sure every asset created was effective and on-brand. I discovered that micromanaging isn’t the hallmark of strong creative leadership. It all comes down to establishing a compelling vision, providing your team with the resources and autonomy they need to realise it, and tactically intervening when necessary.
Expanding Horizons: Contract Creative Director Work
I seized the chance to work on a contract basis with top agencies in New York, Los Angeles, the UK, and Italy after McCann. I collaborated with a number of artists at this time, including Y&R, VML, CPB, Mcgarrybowen, I Luv Dust, Doremus, Amalgamated, and High Wide & Handsome.
Maserati, Dell, Chevrolet, EA Games, Chase, the Obama Foundation, Yahoo News, PETA, and international projects like the Cannes Initiatives are just a few of the well-known accounts I was able to contribute to thanks to these encounters.
Every project presented a fresh challenge with new target groups, creative difficulties to solve, and brand voices to represent. My leadership style also changed with each one, becoming more results-oriented, adaptable, and strategic.
Current Role: Chief Creative Officer at Beautiful Story Inc.
Today, I serve as the Chief Creative Officer at Beautiful Story Inc., a role that allows me to bring my entire skill set together at the highest level. Here, I lead the development and execution of comprehensive branding strategies, manage internal and external creative teams, establish style guides, oversee content creation for campaigns, and continuously research emerging trends to ensure we stay at the forefront of design and technology.
At Beautiful Story Inc., leadership means balancing vision with execution. I work hand-in-hand with cross-functional teams, agencies, and freelancers to craft not just campaigns, but experiences that leave a lasting mark.
My Leadership Philosophy
My approach to leadership is straightforward: Encourage your team to think more broadly than they currently think they can.
- I think it’s important to create a trusting and creative atmosphere where team members can freely express their most audacious ideas.
- Knowing that the best ideas frequently come from the synergy of multiple viewpoints, I place an emphasis on collaboration over competition.
- I continue to be actively involved in the creative process while allowing gifted people the freedom to flourish.
Above all, I set an example by working hard, remaining inquisitive, and constantly seeking out new ideas.
If it’s fast and cheap, it will never be good. If it’s cheap and good, it will never work out quickly. And if it is good and fast, it will never come cheap. But remember: of the three you still have to always choose two.
Think about the content that you want to invest in a created object, and only then will form. The thing is your spirit. A spirit unlike forms hard copy.
I love the feel and sophistication of its superiority. I like people with a keen mind and at the same time easy to talk to.
